Biomass PET resin

Biomass PET resin is manufactured using plant-based raw materials in which monoethylene glycol (MEG), accounting for 30% of the raw material composition of PET resin, is refined from molasses, a byproduct of sugarcane processing.
Our company began selling this product in 2010 and holds the No.1 market share in Japan. It is also used for various applications in Thailand.

Product features

01Contribution to a “decarbonized society” through CO2 emission reduction (approximately 28%).

Our company conducts research based on LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which quantitatively evaluates the impact on ecosystems and the environment from the development stage, in order to promote the expansion of raw materials that take sustainability into consideration.

In 2011, a joint research and survey on LCA was conducted by Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd., Tokyo City University, and our company.

From the production of biomass monoethylene glycol (biomass MEG) and biomass PET resin to product consumption, it was found that CO2 emissions can be reduced by approximately 28% in total (about 0.7 kg per 1 kg of product) compared with petroleum-derived PET.

Following the “2050 Carbon Neutral Declaration,” this product has once again been attracting attention.

02Eco-friendly resin containing about 30% plant-derived raw materials, a renewable resource

Biomass PET resin uses biomass MEG refined from molasses (a by-product of sugarcane processing) as a raw material.
As a result, approximately 30% of the PET resin composition can be made from plant-derived materials.

Main applications

Since the physical properties of biomass PET resin are exactly the same as those of petroleum-derived PET resin, it can be easily switched from the PET resin currently in use and has been adopted in a wide range of applications.

  • Beverage bottles
  • Cosmetic containers
  • Films
  • Sheets, etc.
